Utilities and Municipal Government in Coal Harbour

Coal Harbour is an exciting and picturesque district in downtown Vancouver. The community is blessed with waterfront access and views of the surrounding mountains and Burrard Inlet. Coal Harbour also provides access to some of the best restaurants and shopping opportunities in the entire city.

The city of Vancouver, including Coal Harbour, is governed by a municipal government that is responsible for many of the city’s services. In addition to the services provided, the city of Vancouver is also directly responsible for the well planned neighbourhood, which includes the picturesque views and amenities that you will find in many of the condos that are for sale in Coal Harbour.

Here is a short list and explanation of some of the services and responsibilities that the city of Vancouver offer:

City Council

The municipal government of Vancouver is run by the City Council. City Council consists of the mayor as well as the 10 councilors who are elected for four year terms.
The city council of Vancouver is responsible for the following decisions:

  • To pass bylaws

  • Buy and sell property

  • Collect property taxes

  • Approve budgets and spending for all parts of the City government

Utilities -Waste Disposal and Recycling

Waste Disposal

All garbage is collected from wheeled garbage carts in each Coal Harbour multi-unit building. This service is provided by a local private contractor and is picked up weekly. Contact your strata for more details about this service.

Recycling

For the multi-unit buildings in Coal Harbour, all the recycling is collected in large, labelled blue bins and collected weekly by Waste Management Canada. Both Waste Management Canada and the City of Vancouver are partners with Recycle B.C. – the province wide recycle program.

The city also provides recycling and disposal sites for items that either do not fit in the recycling and waste bins or that are not permitted in these bins. (Mattresses, Electronics, Appliances, Paint)

Both Vancouver’s waste disposal service and recycling program are part of the overall movement towards zero waste and part of the greater vision to help Vancouver become the greenest city in the world by 2020.

The overall goals of this incentive include:

  • Reduce solid waste going to landfill by 50% from 2008 levels

  • Reconsider what we throw away (compost, food scrap recycling)

  • Move away from disposable products

Water and Sewer

One of the goals of the greenest city action plan is to provide Vancouver with the cleanest drinking water of any city in the world. The city of Vancouver is also trying to reduce per capita water consumption by 33% from 2006 levels.

Vancouver’s sewer system delivers over 360 million litres of fresh water to the city’s homes, businesses and removes all waste water from the city effectively and efficiently. It uses the latest environmental technology to ensure a green approach to the city’s sewers and water removal and delivery systems.

Property Taxes

Vancouver property taxes include a flat rate utility bill as well as a general tax that is owed to the city. Property taxes are determined by your home’s assessed value which is set each year by City Council. The property tax notification is sent out in mid-May and the total is due in July. You can pay your property tax in person at City Hall, online or by mail.

To offset your property tax amount, be sure to apply for your homeowner’s grant. This grant is a provincial program that helps reduce the amount of property tax you pay. Remember, you must apply for this grant yearly.

Property taxes pay for the following essential services:

  • Police, firefighting and emergency rescue
