A Brief History of Coal Harbour

Coal Harbour is one of Vancouver’s most sought after neighbourhoods and is a beautiful place to call home for a multitude of reasons. From its great selection of Coal Harbour condos for sale to all of the other great real estate options, this community is the perfect place to raise a family or settle down. Its wide range of services and its proximity to some of Vancouver’s premier attractions and destinations all add to the allure of Coal Harbour. Here is a brief history of the neighbourhood and how Coal Harbour became one of the most picturesque areas in all of Vancouver.

Location

  • Coal Harbour is situated in the downtown core of Vancouver and sits north of Georgia Street, west of Burrard street and east of Stanley Park.

  • The Burrard Inlet is Coal Harbour’s northern border.

  • The natural borders of Stanley Park (Vancouver’s largest park) and Burrard Inlet make Coal Harbour one of the most visually stunning neighbourhoods in all of Vancouver

A History of Vancouver

  • The area on which the city of Vancouver is now built was first discovered by Europeans in 1792 when Captain George Vancouver sailed up the Burrard Inlet to trade with the First Nations living in and around modern day Stanley Park

  • The Vancouver area was not settled until 1862 and then began to grow rapidly after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway

Coal Harbour – The Early Years

  • In 1859, coal was discovered in the area, hence the name Coal Harbour

  • In 1884 Coal Harbour became the official terminal for the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway)

  • Stanley Park was opened in 1888

Coal Harbour – Industrialized

  • In 1911, Coal Harbour started to become a commercial area for sawmills and warehouses

  • During World War II, the area was dominated by munitions factories and ship yards

  • Most of Coal Harbour’s docks and warehouses were destroyed by fires in 1951 and 1952

  • All industry in the area was removed during the 1960’s and 1970’s

Coal Harbour – Post Industrialization

  • Canada Place was built in 1986 as part of Expo 86 and is a Coal Harbour landmark

  • The 1990’s saw large scale condo development transforming Coal Harbour into a residential community and one of Vancouver’s premier waterfront neighbourhoods

This brief history of Coal Harbour has seen the community grow from its humble beginnings of an area rich in natural resources to a stunning, safe and welcoming residential neighbourhood that houses some of Vancouver’s most sought after condos and real estate developments.

Even with all the recent Coal Harbour real estate developments, the community still holds true to its roots and is home to a float plane terminal as well as a floating gas station for both boats and yachts. In addition to these features, Coal Harbour provides many mooring options in its protected harbour and welcomes millions of tourists each year at the cruise ship terminals of Canada Place.

Today, Coal Harbour is a bustling residential community that offers a great selection of condos built to suit a wide clientele ranging from families to young professionals.
